No Fran no worry for recruits
By TRAE THOMPSON
Dennis Franchione's resignation hasn't changed anything for three area recruits who have committed to Texas A&M.
North Richland Hills Birdville quarterback Tommy Dorman (6-foot-3, 210 pounds), Colleyville Covenant offensive lineman Jeffrey Hyde (6-7, 280) and Euless Trinity's Josh Ayers (6-5, 282) all said Saturday that they remain committed to A&M.
Oral commitments aren't binding. Signing day is Feb. 6.
Franchione resigned as Texas A&M's coach after the Aggies' 38-30 victory over Texas on Friday, but the three players expected the move.
"I was more shocked that he did it right after the game," said Dorman, who was in College Station for the game. "I talked to my dad, and he thought he'd wait until [Saturday] and let the players enjoy the win. He almost took it from a high to a low. Lately, I knew it was a matter of time, because I'd heard too much talk. It wasn't a major shock."
Dorman said he talked to two other A&M recruits at the game who also remained committed.
The bigger question now is who will replace Franchione. Ayers said he's already heard names. "I can't wait," Hyde said. "I know it will be somebody good."
Rivals.com rates Texas A&M's class the 11th-best overall, and third in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma and Texas.
The Aggies' impressive list of preseason commitments was led by Dorman, the 26th-ranked player on Bobby Burton's preseason Texas Top 100. As a junior, Dorman threw for 1,685 yards and rushed for 749, finishing with 36 total touchdowns (22 passing).
Defensively, the Aggies picked up a big commitment Aug. 22 from Weatherford lineman Kapron Lewis-Moore (6-4, 225), a first-teamer on Dave Campbell's Super Team defense. Lewis-Moore chose the Aggies over the likes of Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. DeSoto defensive lineman Tony Jerod (6-3, 240), a Star-Telegram State 100 player committed Feb.13.
Hyde is one of three private school players from North Texas who have committed to Big 12 schools, and Ayers was recruited by the Aggies as an offensive lineman.
Ayers said it shows a lot about the players to remain firm with their commitments.
"It shows their character," he said.
