Gold, chocolate good combo for freshman

WACO -- It was difficult to tell ifColleyville Covenant freshman Audrey Smith was more excited aboutwinning a gold medal or finally being able to eat chocolate again.
Smithwon a trio of gold medals at the TAPPS 3A state track and field meet atBaylor, but after a narrow victory in the 4x200 relay, she wascelebrating with her teammates the soon-to-be consumed confectionarygoodness.
"I'm very excited because I just got three golds," shesaid. "I haven't eaten chocolate for a long time because of trackseason, but now I can eat chocolate."
Covenant won the team titles, with the girls finishing with 143 points, and the boys won with 154 points.
"The kids worked hard. They deserved it," Covenant coach Dennis Harris said.
"Wehad to work a lot to figure out what we needed to do to get it done onthe girls side, but we got kids in position and the girls performed. Onthe guys side we actually expected that to happen."
The Covenantgirls also feature a 4x200 relay squad that featured freshmen Smith andKourtney Squires and sophomores Sarah Gotcher and Allison Stallard.
"I'm amazed that we have such a young team and we'll be back next year," Stallard said.
Smith won gold in the 4x100, 4x200 and 100-meter dash in 13.06 seconds.
TheLady Lions were pressed in the 4x200 with a winning time of 1:49.31 amere .03 ahead of second-place Halletsville Sacred Heart.
In Class 4A, the Grapevine Faith boys claimed first and the girls finished second.
"Our boys have finished second the past two years by a combined total of five points," Faith coach Kris Hogan said.
"So we were favored all three of the years and we came through this year, so we're pretty pumped up."
Grapevine Faith's Alex Nerney won the boys 110 hurdles with a 16.17 run in Class 4A.
Hogansaid the Faith girls suffered a disqualification in district qualifyingin the 4x200 relay and might have won the state title had the relayteam been able to compete.
Pantego Christian enjoyed a schoolrecord-setting accomplishment when senior Dawson Cannefax medaled inboth hurdling events in Class 4A.
Cannefax earned gold in the 300 hurdles and bronze in the 110 hurdles even though he began the year as a quarter miler.
Arlington Grace Prep's Janette Eubanks won the 100 hurdles with a 16.28 time in Class 5A.
