Art
classes are offered to all students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 (art concepts for Pre-K students are integrated into the classroom curriculum). These classes help students identify and develop their artistic talents, enhance their sense of personal worth and self-esteem, and create joy and beauty for themselves and the community through the production of art.
In the Pre-Grammar and Grammar schools, students learn about the elements of art such as color, shape, texture, value, form, and space. They
investigate by seeing, feeling, and experimenting. Students express their
imaginations through art materials and tools with opportunities to show
individual ideas and thoughts in simple media. Activities include
drawing, painting, weaving, constructing, print making, and
three-dimensional forms. Students experiment with different art
materials to develop a wide range of skills. In addition, study of the major figures in art history is woven into the applied projects the students work on throughout the year In the Logic school, grades 7 and 8, students have the opportunity to participate in two of the following disciplines: music, drama, and visual art. The art classes serve as a building block of the art program in the Rhetoric school. In the Rhetoric school, grades 9 through 12, students have the opportunity to participate in one or two arts disciplines. The art instruction for this age is graded so that the classes are smaller and the students can receive more individual instruction from the teacher. Art studies in the Rhetoric school examine a wide range of styles and media including Renaissance, Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Pop Art, Pointillism, Abstract art, Egyptian art and African art. Student projects include drawing, painting, use of watercolors, pottery, sculpture, architectural drawing and the development of portfolios.
