Performing Arts - Music

The Music curriculum is offered to all students in Pre-K to Grade 12. Our teachers utilize a sequential, spiral approach in which skills and knowledge are systematically built upon and reinforced. In the early years, students sing many scripture songs in order to facilitate memorization of God's Word.

In the Pre-Grammar and Grammar schools, a variety of instructional strategies are used to teach musical concepts and performance including singing, movement, playing of instruments and music games. Some of the highlights of these years include the first grade tradition of performing a musical version of Peter Rabbit, a study of Peter and the Wolf, and Peter Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker. Musical instruments are studied using Benjamin Britten's composition The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. In addition, during the course of the school year, several grades take a musical "field trip" to enjoy a live performance by a group such as the Fort Worth Symphony, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, or the Texas Ballet Theatre.

In the Logic school, grades 7 and 8, students have the opportunity to participate in two of the following disciplines: music, drama, and visual art. The music instruction for this age is primarily choral, with some piano instruction emphasizing music theory and music reading. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the spring musical theater production. Past performances include Annie, The Music Man, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and Fiddler on the Roof.

In the Rhetoric School, grades 9 through 12, students have the opportunity to specialize in one or two arts disciplines. The music instruction for this age is primarily choral, emphasizing sight reading, basic music theory and ear training. Students also compete in the TAPPS solo and ensemble contest and participate in the spring musical. Past performances include Annie, The Music Man, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and Fiddler on the Roof.
